Vast and mysterious, China has a history traceable across five millennia, 93 percent of the modern population is decended from the Han Dynasty which ruled from 206 BC to 220 AD. The remaining 7 percent consists of 55 minorities who have integrated into Chinese society.
China is the second largest continuous stretch of land in the world after Canada. Its climate varies from region to region and from the visitors point of view, Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit. Weather conditions are at their best from April to June and again from later August to mid- November.
Western food is available in most hotels and is a bit more expensive than local dishes. Of the local cuisine, one of Northern China's specialities, roast Peking Duck, is a treat not to be missed by visitors.
Transport by bicycle seems to be the way most Chinese get around.Public transport such as buses and subways are cheap but very crowded at peak periods. Taxis are plentiful but communicationg where you want to go is a challenge, its better if you have the address written down in Chinese. |
